f India somehow win its final league match against SL then India have good chances even in Super 8.
Why ? -
1) India will goto Super 8 with 2 bonus points.
2) They wont play SL in Super 8 whom if we defeat now would otherwise eager for next encounter against India (typical physcology) and without 2 bonus point will try hard against other fancied teams in Super 8.
3) India will play Ireland whom ideally they should beat easily - extra 2 points. Which means bonus 4 points in a group of vitually 7 teams (considering Ireland stands no chance for semis)
4) WI wont play against Ireland in Super 8 as Irelands would be qualifying from the same group so they have a tougher task.
5) Every team will play six matches. They have to get a maximum of 14 points. Out of this 4 points are already gained. They need to win 6 more points (Total = 10) to get a place in semi-finals. Which teams should be pin-pointed for this?
a) England
b)NewZealand
c) West Indies(On whom we have a recent confidence boost).
So all in all in Super 8 (with Ireland no chance and WI having disadvantage of not able to play Ireland) it could turn out to be favourable for Indians to enter Semis atleast.
for people who are supersitious, in recent past WC has trend of the teams who face it hard earlier does better in the later games :-)
If only Indians can apply some brain and show more commitment and willpower on field, its very much POSSIBLE !
Changes that should be for SL game -
1) Take out Utthapa (yes he is very talented but pressure will be immense to perform in this crunch game and SL knows his game a bit as they played him in recent series and also he can not bowl). If possible utilize him as substitute for his fielding abilities.
2) In place of Utthapa, bring in Pathan. Logic is if his bowling fails initially he can be brought in middle overs or tried (atleast tried) in later overs. If his bowling fails atleast we can try to use him as pinch hitter (infact he is a compact player) and is also a reasonable fielder in the outfield. He has experience in playing in high profile games. Can be a risk worth taking.
3) Take out Agarkar and bring in Harbhajan (there are lot of left handers in SL team). Agarkar is short on confidence and Jaysuriya, Tharanga, Sagakkaara will murder him in this form. In anycase on his current form he aint a better batsman than Bhajji either.
4) Finally Hope for best and keep faith in yourselves :-)
