Nandigram Vs Kalinganagar

It has been interesting to observe the reaction of the press with regard to Nandigram incident which happenned yesterday as opposed to kalinganagar. Since, the last year , media across various organizations have been projecting the unfortunate firing in Kalinganagar as a massacre of genocidal proportions.

But Yesterday, in Nandigram, there was a forced the end-result of the firing is that 11 people have been shot dead. Surpisingly on browsing the Internet, I find the reaction the same incident exceedingly muted.

Let us look at some facts.
Last year, on January 2nd, the Tata people in Kalinganagar tried to go ahead with the acquisition. There was police there to ensure security. Some opposition happenned and then on of the constables was lynched. In return the police opened fired at the tribals. 12 people died in which there were some women also.

The next incident was that these dead bodies were taken for post-mortem and the bodies were returned with their hands cut. This was a major faux pas in part of the administration which should've handled the issue more sensitively. This particular incident led to hijacking of the original issue(unprovoked lynching of the constable) by the vested interests(read anti-industrilization brigade).

Since, then until March 9th this year, there has been a blockade in that area. Industrial development has gne down.

The funny part in this story is that panchayat elections happenned this year in the same areas. The BJD goverment won a majority in the polls.

This implies that people actually oppose the agiatation there. Somehow most of the rallies there seem to consist of people who are outside the state, not localites who have genuine grievances.

Now, in nandigram, yesterday 11 people were shot dead. I'm not aware of any similar provocation like the kalinganagar one. Still, media has been patronising on this matter. This begs to ask the question, is the Media really neutral ?

In the above incidents one major thing is being lost. The state of orissa which desperately needs industrialiazation to obtain its true potential.
